He is the top power hitter in McNeese State history. He earned all-America honors and was twice named to the all-SLC team. He is the only baseball player in McNeese his­tiory to have his number retired. Ben was also named McNeese's athlete of the year. He hit a school record 27 home runs in 1989 and remains the school's all-time leader in home runs with 43 and in RBIs with 174. Twice (in 1989 and 1999) he won the school's triple crown. He was taken in the major league draft by Cincinnati and became a starter with Cleveland.
