He carried the Cowboys into the 1990s in “gangbuster” style. In a nine year career he became McNeese’s winningest all-time football coach with a 78-34-2 record, his teams won four Southland Conference championships and participated in the NCAA 1-AA playoffs a total of seven times. His 1995 team went undefeated in the regular season and was ranked No. 1 in the nation for all of the regular season while his 1997 squad went all the way to the 1-AA championship where it lost by only a point. This native of New Iberia was named SLC coach of the year five times and Louisiana coach of the year three times. Nine of his players earned all-American honors and 38 garnered all-SLC credentials.
