One of the top centers to ever play for the Cowboys, he was a team leader in 1971 when the Cowboys earned a No. 1 national ranking and went on to play in the Grantland Rice Bowl. Also that season, Powell was named to the all-American team selected by the Walter Camp Foundation. He was an all-Gulf States Conference selection and was also named the Cowboys outstanding lineman during his career. Powell was a four year letterman for the Cowboys and he was also a letterman in baseball as a catcher and outfielder. Following graduation he went into coaching and then into private business. He continues to live in his hometown of Silsbee, TX.
