A national champion in boxing, he also served as McNeese State’s athletic trainer for more than 20 years. As a student at McNeese, Fontenot was an outstanding boxer, winning the national junior college 125 pound championship in both 1949 and 1950. In 1960 he became the first registered physical therapist to serve as a trainer in Louisiana, follow­ing graduation from the school of Physical Therapy at Herman Hopsital in Houston. A member of the Louisiana Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame, Fontenot went into private business after leaving McNeese. The McNeese sports medicine center is named in his honor. (DECEASED)
