He’s the highest drafted football player in school and Southland Conference history, having been taken 17th by St. Louis in the 1983 draft. Smith would go on to become a standout for the Buffalo Bills, playing in a couple of Super Bowl games. As a collegiate player, he was one of the best defensive backs in school, state and conference history. He was the league’s and the Louisiana defensive player of the year in 1982 while also earning all-American honors. He was a team MVP and he still holds the school, conference and state record for career kick blocks with 17.
