He was one of the top boxers for McNeese during its junior college days. He lost only one match in his entire career and knocked out LSU national champion Doug Elwood. After a stint in the Air Force, Manuel would return to McNeese, become a member of the golf team and earn his degree. He then spent 29 1/2 years as a member of the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Department as chief deputy, serving as sheriff for a three month period. He retired in 1980 but still puts in some time working with the sheriff’s department and playing golf.
