updated 9:45 p.m. on Monday

LAKE CHARLES – Coming off a record-setting performance in a 41-21 win over Incarnate Word, McNeese junior safety Brent Spikes has been named this week's Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week the league announced on Monday. In addition, he was named by College Sporting News its National All-Star.

The Newton, Texas native set a new school and conference record with 148 interception return yards after he picked off three passes against the Cardinals. His three interceptions tied a school record for most picks in a game by an individual.

He had returns of 62, 41 and 45 yards with the last being taken back for a touchdown.

With the win, the Cowboys (5-2, 3-1 SLC) have jumped up two spots in both the Sports Network and the FCS Coaches Top 25 polls. McNeese is ranked eighth in the coaches poll and ninth in the Sports Network, and is the highest ranked conference team in the polls.

Following its 27-17 loss at Stephen F. Austin, Southeastern Louisiana fell to No. 15 in both polls. Meanwhile SFA broke into both rankings and is No. 23 in the coaches poll and 24th on the SN list.

McNeese travels to Northwestern State this Saturday for a 6 p.m. contest and will return home on Nov. 8 to play Stephen F. Austin.
