LAKE CHARLES – McNeese broked into the top 5 in both FCS polls on Monday afternoon, holding down No. 5 in the Sports Network poll while climbing to No. 4 in the FCS Coaches poll.
The Cowboys (1-1) were off last weekend and will return to action on Saturday against Arkansas Tech, a NCAA Division II school out of the Great American Conference.
"We're looking at this week as another opponent," said head coach
Matt Viator at his weekly press luncheon on Monday. "I can promise you, we're doing everything the same way in how we prepared for Nebraska and Prairie View."
ATU will come into Saturday's game with a 2-1 record and coming off a 34-14 conference victory over Southern Nazarene. The Wonderboys run a balanced attack on offense, averaging 204 yards passing and 106 rushing per game.
Quarterback Dennis Robertson has completed 48 of 98 passes for 612 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions thrown.
"Defensively, we want to try to make them one-dimensional," said Viator. "And on offense, we just need to execute."
Viator noted that junior running back
Nate Holmes will be out indefinitely with an injury he suffered against Prairie View. Because of that, freshman
Ryan Ross will have the redshirt taken off of him that was expected this season.
North Dakota State continues to top both polls followed by Eastern Washington and Coastal Carolina to round out the top three. McNeese is in at No. 4 followed by Villanova in the coaches poll while New Hampshire is ranked fourth in the Sports Network poll followed by the Cowboys.
Southeastern Louisiana took a tumble out of the top 10 in both polls after it was upset at Southeast Missouri State, and Sam Houston State dropped out of the top 25 in both polls.
