McNeese makes change in soccer program

Following an end of the season review of the McNeese State University women's soccer program, Athletics Director Bruce Hemphill said a change in direction is needed for the program.

"We appreciate the efforts of Coach Scooter Savoie during his time at McNeese but we feel it is time for the women's soccer program to enter a new phase," Hemphill said. Savoie helped start the program in 1996 and led the team to several successful seasons in the mid-2000s, including a league title in 2007.  "We thank Coach Savoie for his efforts and wish him well in his future endeavors." Savoie compiled a 117-173-28 record at McNeese and the team finished the 2015 season with a 6-11 record.

Hemphill also announced that, effective immediately, Associate Head Coach Drew Fitzgerald will be the team's interim head coach. "This is a critical time for recruiting and Drew will bring consistency and organization to that process," Hemphill said.

Fitzgerald just completed his 10th season as a Division I women's soccer coach. He was a McNeese assistant coach under Savoie from 2005-2008 and returned to McNeese as associate head coach in 2014 after serving as an assistant coach at Missouri State University. As associate head coach, Fitzgerald handles recruiting, team travel, day-to-day operations and student-athlete development.

He also served as the Barbe High School boy's soccer team head coach in 2007 and 2008.

Fitzgerald earned his bachelor's degree and master's degree in sport management from Texas A&M University. He also holds a National Diploma and Goalkeeper I and II diplomas from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and a National "D" License from the United States Soccer Federation.

His wife, Ashleigh, is currently the head volleyball coach at McNeese.
