LAKE CHARLES—The McNeese volleyball team didn't waste any time in its straight set win over Texas Southern (25-11, 25-13, 25-19) in a match that lasted less than an hour and a half Tuesday night.
Outside hitter
Malina Sanchez led all players with a match high 13 kills. She was the only player to record double figure kills on the night and also ended the night with 12 digs. Sanchez was joined in double figure digs by
Bridget Justis who recorded a match high 13.
Hailee Showers ended the match with 11. Setter
Kelly Graham dished out 28 of the Cowgirls' 38 assists on the night and
Ebony Lewis led McNeese with five blocks while
Shanna Spree was credited with four.
McNeese (7-13) trailed for most of the first and third sets but came back to win both. Trailing 12-9 in the opening set, McNeese rallied to outscore the Tigers 8-5 to tie the set at 17 apiece on an
Ebony Lewis service ace.
Malina Sanchez gave McNeese a brief lead before TSU would tie the set at 18. A ball handling error called on TSU's setter gave the Cowgirls a 19-18 lead that sparked another rally. The Cowgirls went on to score six of the final seven points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.
The second set was all McNeese from the opening point that began with two kills from Sanchez and a TSU error that allowed McNeese to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Back-to-back service aces by
Bridget Justis pushed the Cowgirl lead to 10-5 and then with the Cowgirls leading 12-7,
Adison Giambrone served for eight straight points to increase the lead to 19-8. McNeese would outscore the Tigers 6-3 the rest of the way to take a 2-0 lead.
Following the break, the Cowgirls came out a little sluggish but managed to put a few runs together behind the serve of Justis, Giambrone and Lewis to seal the win.
McNeese will return to Southland Conference action this Saturday when the Cowgirls travel to Nicholls for a 12 p.m. match. The Cowgirls will return home next Tuesday, Oct. 20 to host UL-Lafayette in a 7 p.m. match.
