LAKE CHARLES—The McNeese volleyball team extended its winning streak to four matches and produced its best hitting percent of the season in a straight set (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) win over Louisiana-Lafayette Tuesday night. The win improves the Cowgirls to 9-13 overall. The Cajuns fall to 5-18.
In a match that could have gone either way, it was the Cowgirls who took advantage of 19 Cajun hitting errors and three blocking errors to pick up the win. The Cowgirls on the other hand committed a season low seven hitting errors and produced a season best .370 hitting percent.
Senior
Malina Sanchez once again led McNeese with another double-double, her ninth of the season. Sanchez put down a match high 14 kills and added 11 digs along with her .500 hitting percent. Sanchez committed on hitting error in 26 attempts. Senior setter
Kelly Graham dished out a match high 31 assists and nearly missed her 11
th double-double of the season by picking up nine digs. Junior libero
Bridget Justis led all players with 15 digs.
McNeese took a 2-0 overall match lead by taking the first set 25-20. The Cowgirls led early but let the lead slip away before regaining the lead for good on a Ray Myers kill. With McNeese leading 20-19, back-to-back kills by Sanchez and
Ebony Lewis force the Cajuns to call a timeout. Following the timeout, UL-Lafayette scored their final point of the set at 22-20 on a Chloe Cordell kill. McNeese then scored the final three points on kills by Graham and Sanchez and a Louisiana-Lafayette error.
After a Cajun kill by Keely Hayes in the second set tied it at seven, McNeese reeled off four straight points to take an 11-7 lead and one they wouldn't give up.
Shanna Spree's kill ended the set for a 2-0 overall match lead.
Following the break, the third set wasn't any different than the firs as both teams traded points. The set consisted of nine ties before a Myers kill would give the Cowgirls a 19-18 lead. Kills by Spree and Sanchez forced UL-Lafayette into a timeout with the Cowgirls leading 21-18. After the timeout Sanchez would strike again for a 22-18 lead then Spree would make it 23-19 on her fifth kill of the night. A Cajun error would move the Cowgirls one point closer to securing the match before
Ebony Lewis' kill ended the match to give McNeese its fourth straight win.
McNeese will return to its Southland Conference schedule by hosting Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. Thursday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christ at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
