CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The McNeese State women's soccer team fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 1-0, on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon at the Dugan Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Cowgirls (6-10, 3-7 SLC) fell into a tie for eighth place along with Northwestern State in the Southland Conference standings and are now faced with a win or go home situation. A victory this coming Friday night would help McNeese's chance of clinching a postseason spot but must rely on some teams from around the league for help. With only one game left, only four points separates the coveted sixth place from 10
th in the regular season standings.
The Islanders (5-9-2, 5-4-1 SLC) clinched a spot into the postseason after logging their third consecutive victory. AMCC has won four out its last five contests in the latter part of the conference slate.
AMCC scored the lone goal of the game just six minutes into the second half. The score came on a low cross from the Islanders' Emma Biba that met Jessica Berdan who tapped the shot in past the goalkeeper.
McNeese never gave up and had numerous chances to tie the match. Freshman
Erin Winters had a header attempt off of a corner kick that missed wide left in the 67
th minute while the Cowgirls attempted a total of four shots in the first half. Sophomore
Sara Ortiz led the team with three shots on the day.
In all, the Islanders outshot the Cowgirls 7-6 for the game, including four shots in the second half alone.
McNeese will wrap up the regular season as it continues to fight for a second consecutive appearance in the SLC Tournament when it goes to battle against rival Lamar at Cowgirl Field on Friday. The Cowgirls will host Senior Night, which can be viewed via Live Stream on McNeeseSports.com.
