Volleyball Falls To UIW In Five Sets

SAN ANTONIO, Texas--  The McNeese volleyball team let a 2-1 lead slip away in a 3-2 Southland Conference loss at Incarnate Ward Wednesday afternoon in a match that was postponed Tuesday night. With the UIW match moved to Wednesday, the Cowgirls' match at New Orleans that was scheduled for Thursday has been moved to Friday. No match time has yet to be determined.

The Cowgirls, led by Malina Sanchez's 21 kills, also got double figure kills from Shanna Spree who put down a career-high 15 kills and 10 more from Hailee Showers. Not only did Showers help on the offense, she came away with a career high 23 digs to lead McNeese. Also picking up double figure digs was Bridget Justis with 22, Kelly Graham had 16 and Sanchez added 10. Graham dished out a match high 50 assists, six shy of tying her career of 56 against SFA earlier this year.

McNeese (10-15, 5-5 SLC) dropped the first set 25-17 then settled down to win the next two sets 25-21 and 25-19 to take an overall 2-1 lead. Incarnate Word (7-13, 5-6 SLC) evened the match at two sets apiece with a 31-29 win in what is longest set for the Cowgirls this season.

McNeese opened the fifth set on a 7-2 lead but UIW scored four straight points to cut the Cowgirl lead to 7-6. McNeese extended its lead to 8-6 on a kill by Rae Myers before the Cardinals would go on to score five straight to take an 11-8 lead. A kill by McNeese's Shanna Spree brought the Cowgirls back to within two (11-9) before Incarnate Word would go on to score the matches final four points to take the set 15-9 and the overall match.
