Volleyball Picks Up Southland Win At Southeastern La.

HAMMOND—McNeese volleyball ended what was an unusual week for the Cowgirls with a 3-1 win over Southeastern La. Saturday to improve to 11-16 overall and evened their conference record at 6-6. The Cowgirls return home to close out the regular season with four straight home matches.

Senior Malina Sanchez continues to carry the Cowgirls as she produced her third double-double this week with 18 kills and 13 digs. Shanna Spree tied her career high 11 kills. Bridget led a trio of Cowgirls with 27 digs. Hailee Showers ended the match with 10. Kelly Graham dished out a match high 45 assists and Ebony Lewis recorded five blocks while Monica Hudgins was credited with four.

After dropping the first set 22-25, McNeese responded with a 2-22 second set win to even the match at one set apiece. The Cowgirls led the set for the most part until SE La. tied it at 18 all. From this point on the match consisted of four ties with the last one coming at 22 apiece. A kill be freshman Ebony Lewis gave the Cowgirls a 24-22 lead then a hitting error by the Lions was the final point of the set as the Cowgirls went on to pick up the 25-22 win.

McNeese took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-21 third set win. The Cowgirls took the early lead and increased it to 15-10 on a rare Kelly Graham kill. Another Graham kill gave McNeese a 16-12 lead. Southeastern La. took a brief lead at 19-18 but three straight Lion errors gave the Cowgirls a 21-19 lead. McNeese went on to outscore SE La. 4-2 to come away with the third set win.

Just like the third set, McNeese jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set and never looked back. The Cowgirls jumped out to a 7-4 lead and then an 11-8 lead on a Sanchez kill. With the Cowgirls leading 18-15, McNeese ended the match by outscoring the Lions 7-2 the rest of the way to close out the match.

McNeese will host Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday that will start the four match home stand.
