LAKE CHARLES—The 2015 McNeese volleyball seniors (
Malina Sanchez,
Kelly Graham, and
Amber Fryer) went out in style Saturday in front of one of the largest crowds this season in their final home match in a Cowgirl uniform with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 25-12) win over Nicholls. The win clinched the fourth seed in next weeks Southland Conference Tournament in Conway, Arkansas. The fourth place finish is the highest finish for a McNeese team since 2007 when the Cowgirls also finished fourth. McNeese will play the fifth seed at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 20. The pairings will be released sometime later today when all matches are complete.
Like she has done all season, Sanchez led a trio of Cowgirls in kills with 14 and recorded her 16
th double-double of the season with 10 digs. Also in double figure kills were
Rae Myers with 12 and
Rebecca Korenek with 11. Graham picked up another double-double herself to make that 16 for her on the year. Graham dished out 41 assists and picked up 13 digs. Libero
Bridget Justis led all players with 20 digs.
Adison Giambrone was credited with 14. Fryer played a huge part at the net and came away with five blocks, one shy of her career high.
McNeese jumped out to a 2-0 lead by taking the first two sets (25-17, 25-18). Following intermission, Nicholls avoided the sweep with a third set 25-21 win. The Cowgirls regrouped in the fourth set and took the lead for good at 7-6 on a bad set by Nicholls' setter. Back-to-back kills extended the McNeese lead to 17-9 and two points later Sanchez put down another monster kill for a 19-10 lead. After a Nicholls timeout, the Cowgirls once again went to Sanchez and she delivered with another kill for a 20-10 lead. Leading 21-12, it was only fitting that a senior would serve out the match and it happened to be Sanchez. Sanchez served for the final four points of the match with McNeese scoring on two Nicholls attack errors, a service ace and a bad set ended the match for the Cowgirl win.
McNeese concludes the regular season with a 14-17 overall record and 9-7 in the SLC. Nicholls ends their season with a 9-19 overall record and 4-12 in the SLC
