LAKE CHARLES – Jamaya Burr scored a career-high 23 points for McNeese but two lengthy scoring droughts by the Cowboys, one in each half, helped Texas State post a 70-67 win here Saturday afternoon.
The loss dropped McNeese to 1-4 on the season as Texas State improves to 2-1. The Bobcats snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Cowboys in Lake Charles as they picked up their first victory in Burton Coliseum since 1993.
Jarren Greenwood added 13 points for the Cowboys while
Craig McFerrin led the team with seven rebounds and four blocked shots to go along with six points.
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury led four Texas State players who scored in double-figures with 17 points. Ojai Black added 14, Emani Gant 13, and Ethan Montalvo scored 10. Gant led the team with 15 boards as the Bobcats dominated the glass 48-27 including a 16-5 advantage on offensive rebounds.
McNeese led 8-2 after a McFerrin jumper with 16:41 to play in the first half and 10-9 after another layup basket with 14:35 to play. That's when the Cowboys went cold and missed their next seven field goals in addition to two free throws over a span of 7:04 as Texas State built an 18-10 lead.
Greenwood hit a jumper at the buzzer to make it a 30-24 deficit at the half.
Tevin Jackson's three-pointer with 15:29 to play put the Cowboys up 37-35 and after the Bobcats regained the lead, a
Stephen Ugochukwu layup tied the game at 39-39 with 13:16 to play.
That would be the final points for the Cowboys for a span of 5:33 as Texas State ran up a 51-39 lead with 7:55 to play.
McNeese hit three 3-point goals in the final 33 seconds to make it the final margin.
The Cowboys will be back in action on Monday night when they visit Central Michigan.
