Cowgirls Defeat SUNO 97-61

LAKE CHARLES- The McNeese women's basketball team extended their winning streak to four games with a commanding 97-61 win over Southern-New Orleans Sunday.

"Our execution was really good," said head coach Brooks Donald Williams. "Our post players did a really good job of rolling on the screen. Our screen and roll produced a lot of points in the paint."

Sophomores Jasmyn Carswell, Mercedes Rogers and Frederica Haywood combined for 39 points and 27 rebounds. McNeese scored 64 of their 91 points in the paint. Carswell scored all 13 of her career high points in the first two quarters and for the second game in a row tied her career high with nine rebounds. Rogers also ended the game with career high 17 points on 7-of-11 from the field. She missed her first career double-double by one rebound, ending the game with nine. Haywood scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds as well. Senior Allison Baggett led all players with 18 points. Baggett was 8-of-10 from the field including one 3-pointer in only 17 minutes played.

McNeese (4-1) played 13 players and got 49 points off the bench. Each player played least eight minutes. The Cowgirls outscored SUNO (0-5) in every quarter and opened the game with a 22-14 first quarter lead and led 49-29 at the half.

The Cowgirls took their first 30-point lead on a three-pointer by Amber Donnes midway through the third quarter and held a 76-43 lead at the end of the quarter.

McNeese opened up the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run on layups by Hannah Cupit and Gabby Guidry for an 80-43 lead. SUNO would get as close as 27 points following a 3-pointer by Deja Young. From this point on, McNeese outscored the Lady Knights 14-7 to close out the game and held its largest lead of 38 points on a Keara Hudnall layup.

"I thought our backup point guards did a good job. They are both very different. They did a good job of distributing the ball. Hannah did an excellent job of pushing the ball up the floor and setting the tempo. Anna came in and finished off the game. She did a great job of utilizing the clock and finding the right people to score."

The Cowgirls will return to Burton Coliseum on Tuesday, Dec. 1 to host Louisiana College at 7 p.m.
