Cowgirls Travel To 4th Ranked Baylor On Sunday

LAKE CHARLES—McNeese women's basketball team will travel to Waco, Texas to face undefeated (9-0) and fourth ranked Baylor Sunday in a 2 p.m. game. The game is the second Sunday game for the Cowgirls this season. McNeese fell 74-55 at Tulane last Sunday.
 
McNeese (6-2) is coming off a 70-69 home win over Loyola of New Orleans on Wednesday. Sophomore Jasmyn Carswell recorded her second double double (12 pts., 11 reb.) in the last three games. Carswell leads the Cowgirls with 8.3 rpg. Seniors Allison Baggett and Jayln Johnson are the only two McNeese players averaging in double digits with 14.0 and 10.8 ppg., respectively. Baggett is two points shy of moving into fifth place in McNeese career scoring. Johnson leads McNeese with 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals. Sophomore Mercedes Rogers has a team high 64.5 percent from the field and junior Amber Donnes is shooting 43.3 percent from three-point range.
 
Baylor and McNeese have played two similar opponents so far this season as both have faced Texas-Arlington and Rice. The Lady Bears, who are 7-0 at home this season, also picked up an 86-44 win over Southland Conference foe Northwestern State on Dec. 6. Baylor is coming off a 96-42 win over Grambling on Dec. 6.
 
The Lady Bears are led by All-American junior forward Nina Davis, junior guard Alexis Jones and freshman post Kalani Brown with 16.4, 12.6 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. Senior point guard Niya Johnson averages 6.9 points, a nation's-leading 9.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game. Senior post Kristina Higgins leads Baylor in rebounds with 5.4 per game while Davis is averaging 5.3 per. Davis and Johnson have been named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 list and most recently, the Naismith Trophy Early Season Watch List.
 
Baylor holds a 7-6 all-time series record over McNeese and have won the last five meetings with all five played in Waco. The last McNeese win over Baylor (85-70) was in Lake Charles during the 1986-87 season. The game was the first women's game played in Burton Coliseum. The last McNeese win in Waco (73-59) came during the 1985-86 season.
