Women's Basketball Returns Home For Five of Last Seven Games

LAKE CHARLES— After playing six of their last seven games on the road, the McNeese women's basketball team gladly returns to Burton Coliseum Thursday to host Southeastern La. in a 7 p.m. Southland Conference game.

McNeese (12-10, 6-5 SLC), who is 9-2 at home this season, will conclude the regular season by playing five of their last seven games on their home court.

The Cowgirls will look to end a two game losing skid and will look to notch their second win over Southeastern La. (7-14, 3-7 SLC) this season.  The Cowgirls defeated Southeastern La. 78-57 in Hammond on Jan. 29.

Last week wasn't a good week for the Cowgirls as they fell 86-90 in triple overtime to New Orleans last Thursday and 59-70 to Nicholls Saturday. McNeese enters the game in seventh place in the league standings, two and a half games out of second place Stephen F. Austin. Lamar is currently in first place at 10-2.

Juniors Allison Baggett and Jayln Johnson continue to lead the Cowgirls in scoring with Baggett averaging 16.5 ppg. and Johnson averaging 12.9, respectively. Johnson also leads the team with 4.9 assists, ranking her second in the SLC.

Senior Talisa Boyd leads the Cowgirls in rebounds (6.8) and field goal percent (50.9) while Amber Donnes is shooting 34.0 percent from three-point range.

Southeastern La., who has lost six of their last seven games, is also riding a two game losing streak.  The Lady Lions fell 48-60 to Central Arkansas last Wednesday and 74-75 to Abilene Christian Saturday. Three SE La. players are averaging in double figures. Symone Miller is averaging 12.7 ppg. Nanna Pool is averaging 11.6 ppg. and leads the Lady Lions with 9.3 rpg. Elizabeth Styles is averaging 10.7 ppg. and leads the conference with 6.2 assists per game.

The Cowgirls will conclude the week by hosting Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Saturday in their Play4Kay game.

"Play4Kay" is an opportunity for college basketball coaches to raise breast cancer awareness, funds for research and to honor individuals who have breast cancer or who are survivors of the disease. The women's basketball team will also host honored guest Ethel Precht, the founder of Ethel Precht Hope Breast Cancer Walk and Foundation. Any donations taken at the game will go directly to the Precht Foundation. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink to show their support.

Also on Saturday, it's the Cowgirls' annual Dessert-Off contest. Businesses or individuals that enter the contest will provide their best desserts and the judges are encouraged to tip their favorites. The dessert with the most tip money will be the Cowgirl Dessert-Off Grand Champion. A runner-up and best in show will also be awarded. For only $5 (cash only) anyone can be a judge and try as many desserts as they can handle. The winners will be announced during the first media timeout of the men's game.
