NEW ORLEANS—McNeese's
Jayln Johnson scored a career-high 32 points in a 90-86 triple overtime Southland Conference loss to New Orleans Thursday night. UNO outscored McNeese 14-10 in the final overtime period to pull out the victory.
The Cowgirls 12-9 overall and 6-4 in the SLC, had a chance to put the game away in the second overtime but McNeese missed seven free throws, a place where the Cowgirls entered the game shooting 69.7 percent as a team. The triple overtime is the first in program history for both teams.
Four Cowgirls scored in double figures with
Jayln Johnson leading the Cowgirls with a career high 32 points. Johnson was 6 of 11 from the field including 3 three-pointers. Johnson also connected on 17 of 22 free throws.
Allison Baggett scored 13 points while
Amber Donnes and
Mercedes Rogers both chipped in 11.
McNeese, who make 11 three-pointers against UNO in Lake Charles, managed to make on four in 22 attempts. McNeese turned the ball over 23 times on the night and were outrebounded by a slim 54-53 margin.
The Cowgirls fought back from an 11-point deficit and outscored UNO 7-2 the final three minutes of regulation to send the game into the first overtime. Donnes made a layup with 16seconds to play to tie the game at 57 all.
In the second overtime 10 of the games 16 points scored came from the free throw line. After UNO made two to take a 59-57 lead, McNeese scored the next six points to take a four-point lead. UNO cut the lead to one point then Johnson made two more free throws for a three-point Cowgirl lead with 12 seconds left. UNO's
Danielle Davis hit a three-pointer with :03 to send the game into a second overtime.
In the second overtime, it was UNO who took a four point lead early on. McNeese tied the game 72 all on a Johnson three-pointer then took a 76-74 lead with 11 seconds on two free throws by Johnson. UNO once again tied the game on a layup by Octavia Wilson with three seconds, sending the game to a third overtime.
The first half is one the Cowgirls will want to forget about after shooting 21.4 percent from the field. Unlike five days ago when the Cowgirls made 11 three-pointers in the game, McNeese struggled from three-point range in the first half, making only one in nine attempts. The Cowgirls made more free throws (12) than field goals.
McNeese had chances to score but uncharacteristically missed several shot around the basket including several layups. The Cowgirls didn't help their cause by turning the ball over 11 times in the half.
The Privateer opened the game up with a much higher intensity level than the Cowgirls did and were more aggressive on the boards. UNO grabbed 20 first half rebounds and scored 14 points in the paint.
McNeese took an early lead when Baggett was fouled on a three-point attempt. Baggett made all three free throws. McNeese held as much as a four point lead, three minutes into the game until Octavia Wilson gave the Privateers the lead, five minutes into the game. UNO held as much as a 12-point lead (27-15) with 6:40 left. McNeese went on a 10-5 run the rest of the way to trail 32-25 at the half.
