LAKE CHARLES – McNeese State will close out the regular season with a special 1 o'clock tip on Sunday as the Cowboys host Central Arkansas and looking to head into the Southland Conference Tournament with their longest league winning streak in several years.
Three Cowboy seniors, the "Lake Charles 3," will be recognized during a pregame ceremony –
Desharick Guidry,
Kevin Hardy, and
Keelan Garrett.
The game is being played on Sunday due to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's Girls' Top 28 state tournament being held at Burton Coliseum through Saturday.
McNeese (13-15, 7-10 SLC) will wrap up the No. 5 seed with a win over the Bears (2-26, 2-15), the team's highest seed in the tourney since being a No. 4 seed in the 2012 tournament when the Cowboys advanced to the championship game.
Guidry is on the verge of wrapping up his second consecutive conference rebounding title with 11.3 on the season and will be the first player in the league to achieve the feat since the late 90s.
He'll enter Sunday's game leading the team and ranked No. 4 in the league with a 17.6 scoring average and holds the school and conference record with 20 double-doubles on the season, a number that ranks him second in the nation. His rebounding average is sixth in the NCAA.
Hardy is the league leader and ranked fourth in the nation with 2.9 steals per game and is second on the team in both scoring (13.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg).
Garrett is averaging 10.2 points a game and leads the team with 56 three-point goals made. He's connected on 11 of 19 from long range the last three games, including a perfect 4-for-4 in the last outing against Lamar.
The Bears are led in scoring by freshman Jordan Howard who is scoring at a 15.8 clip.
McNeese beat UCA 77-60 back on Feb. 24 in Conway. In that game, Garrett scored 25 points on 10 of 16 shooting and 5 of 9 from 3-point range.
The Cowboys will open play at the 2015 SLC Tournament on Wednesday either at 5 or 7:30 p.m. at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. Tickets are on sale at the McNeese ticket office.
