Softball Eliminated From Conference Tournament

NATCHITOCHES—Second seed McNeese State was eliminated from the Southland Conference Softball Tournament with a 5-0 loss Wednesday to fourth seed Southeastern La. The Cowgirls end the season 36-20, having won 30 or more games for the past seven seasons.

"Obviously we are disappointed at how the week ended for us," said head coach Joanna Hardin. "The tournament ending doesn't change how proud I am of this team. They fought and competed all week as well as all season. We faced a lot of adversity and never gave up or backed down. I love these girls and this coaching staff, its tough to see the season end this way but I'm proud of them," said Hardin.

For the second straight game, the Cowgirls struggled in the circle and at the plate. Starter Emily Vincent walked the first four batters of the game including walking in the first run of the game. McNeese escaped the inning when Vincent got Teresa Lemons to ground out to short.

The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Sydney Booker's base hit, hit the third base bag and went into left field to score Carlie Whittington for the second run for the Lions.

Vincent was relieved by freshman Jolie Trahan in the second inning after giving up two runs on six walks.

Southeastern La. extended its lead to 4-0 with two runs in the second on a RBI double down the left field line by Amber Sather and a single to left by Megan Moore.

McNeese attempted to put a rally together in the third inning when Hailey Drew and Erika Piancastelli drew back-to-back walks but nothing would come out of it as Vincent popped up to short to end the threat.

Southeastern La. scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Booker to extend the Lion lead to 6-0.

After an hour and a half rain delay in the bottom of the sixth, McNeese hoped that it would change the momentum but unfortunately it didn't. The Cowgirls just couldn't get the timely hits that have helped them all season long. When the Cowgirls did reach base, Southeastern La. would make a good play to get out of the inning.

Erika Piancastelli's single in the first was the only hit in the game for the Cowgirls. Piancastelli, Bryanna Castro and Hailey Drew reached base on walks.

Vincent took the loss, falling to 14-6 on the year.
