CONWAY, Ark. – The McNeese State women's soccer team allowed a goal four minutes into the second overtime to fall in a heartbreaker, 2-1, at Central Arkansas on Friday night.
The Sugar Bears scored the game-winner at the 104:43 mark off a dribble into the box from Shelby Wilson that found Camille Bassett. Bassett's shot cleared the McNeese goalkeeper and landed in the back of the net.
The goal spoiled a terrific game from McNeese goalkeeper
Lauren Sestak, who has been the rock in between the posts this season. Sestak entered the game ranked first in the SLC with a .826 save percentage and ranked in the top five in goals against average.
Central Arkansas (4-6, 1-1 SLC) wasted no time getting on the board when Dayna Mounie scored in the 34th minute off a dribble across the edge and put into the box to give the Sugar Bears a 1-0 lead.
However, the Cowgirls (3-5, 0-2 SLC) held strong and finally broke through with just six minutes remaining before the end of the match. The goal was set up when sophomore forward
Gabi D'Alesandro set up a pass onto the feet junior striker
Kayla Goedicke, who beat the keeper from 10 yards out to pull McNeese even.
The Cowgirls snapped a streak of four matches without netting a goal.
The assist was D'Alesandro's second on the season as she now leads the team in total points with six (two goals and two assists).
The goal was Goedicke's first of the season and the first since scoring three goals during her freshman season. The Katy, Texas native battled through injuries that sidelined her during the 2014 season and came back to help push the Cowgirls to a strong finish Friday night.
Neither team scored in the first portion of the overtime period, although McNeese encountered a few chances throughout the remainder of the contest. The Cowgirls outshot Central Arkansas, 18-13 in the match.
McNeese will return to the Bayou State for a rivalry showdown with Northwestern State Sunday afternoon. The contest is slated to kick off at 1 p.m. at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
