LAKE CHARLES—McNeese women's basketball will begin a four game home stand Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against Sam Houston State at Burton Coliseum.
McNeese (10-6, 2-2 SLC) is coming off a 79-62 road loss at league leading Abilene Christian on Wednesday that snapped the Cowgirls' two-game winning streak. After producing their best shooting night from the field in the win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Saturday, the Cowgirls had their second lowest shooting night of the season against the Wildcats.
The teams will meet for the 52
nd time with McNeese leading the series 27-24. The Cowgirls have won five of the last six games including a 79-74 road win in Huntsville in the only meeting last season.
Senior guard
Jayln Johnson leads McNeese in scoring, assists and steals. Johnson is coming off a season high 25 points against Abilene and is averaging 13.1 ppg. and is fourth in the SLC with an 18.3 average in conference games only. She is also dishing out a league best 4.4 assists in conference games only as well as picking up 1.6 steals per game.
Fellow senior
Allison Baggett is also averaging in double figures with 11.8 ppg. while sophomore
Frederica Haywood leads with 6.4 rebounds per contest. Sophomore
Jasmyn Carswell continues to lead the Cowgirls with a 59.0 field goal percent.
Sam Houston State (7-8, 3-2 SLC) is coming off a 67-63 road loss at Nicholls on Wednesday. The Bearkats are led in scoring by Shernise Robertson's 18.2 ppg. in league games only. Angela Beadle leads the Bearkats in rebounds and is tied for second in the SLC with 11.0 rpg. Beadle is second on the team in scoring with 12.9 ppg. and 15.8 ppg. in conference games only.
Following Saturday's game, the Cowgirls will remain home to host Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20. The Cowgirls will also host Northwestern State next Saturday at 1 p.m. and Southeastern La. at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27.
