Cowboy cagers look to get back on track at SLU on Monday

HAMMOND – McNeese posted its worst shooting game among its eight Southland Conference contests on Saturday night in a 76-64 loss at UNO. Now the Cowboys will look to get back to playing like they were while on a streak of three wins in four games when they visit Southeastern Louisiana.

Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at SLU's University Center. The game will air live on the McNeese Radio Network (Cajun Radio 1470 and 1290 AM and on cajunradio.com).

The Cowboys (5-13, 3-5 SLC) are still searching for their first win away from home (0-10 on the season).

"We're just trying to get that first win and get over the hump," said head coach Dave Simmons. "Southeastern is a very quick team who will probably play four guards and one forward."

SLU (3-17, 1-6 SLC) has dropped two straight and 11 of its last 12 games and is coming off a 91-76 loss at Northwestern State in a game that saw the Lions lead 32-30 at the half but then surrender 61 second half points to the Demons as NSU shot 61 percent in the second half, including 70 percent (7-10) from three-point range.

In McNeese's loss to UNO on Saturday, the Cowboys were held to 37.5 percent shooting, their lowest total in conference games and the first time to make less than 40 percent in six games. The long range shooting was worse at just 16 percent after making just 3 of 19.

True freshman James Harvey, who has established himself as a big 3-point threat after sinking a total of 15 in the last four games, was blanked on Saturday on nine long range shots and 0-10 overall.

Jamaya Burr and Craig McFerrin are the only two for the Cowboys averaging double figures scoring on the season, Burr with a team-high 14.9 average while McFerrin is putting in 10.3 per game. McFerrin also leads the team and is ranked second in the league with 7.9 rebounds per game. He's coming off a 23 point, 14 rebound game at UNO, career-highs in both.

Counting just conference games, McFerrin tops the league with 8.9 rebounds and is 10th in shooting with 56.9 percent of his shots made.

SLU is led in scoring by Zay Jackson who is putting in 12.8 points a game.

The Cowboys won all three games against the Lions last year, including a first round tournament game. McNeese beat SLU 73-60 last February in Hammond as Burr helped lead the way with 17 points.

McNeese has won just two of the last 10 games played in Hammond. Last year's win snapped and 8-game losing streak in the University Center.

Following Monday's game, the Cowboys will wrap up their 3-game southeast Louisiana road swing on Saturday when they visit Nicholls.

McNeese will be back home on Feb. 11 when it hosts UNO.
