Soccer Battles To 2-2 Double OT Tie With AMCC

LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's soccer team battled back from one goal down late in the second half to record a 2-2 double overtime tie with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon at Cowgirl Field.

With the tie, McNeese is now 8-8-1 overall and 4-5-1 in Southland Conference play while AMCC is 3-13-1 on the year and 3-6-1 in league action. The match was McNeese's second overtime match in its last two games.

The Cowgirls got out to an early lead in the 28th minute as junior Kayla Goedicke received a header over the backline from fellow teammate Savannah LaRicci and launched a shot past the goal keeper into the top corner of the net. The goal was Goedicke's fifth this season while LaRicci was credited with her sixth assist.

A&M-Corpus Christi provided an equalizer in the 46th minute when Brooke Erdmann recorded a shot that flew past McNeese's Annie Bravenec to make the match a 1-1 contest.

Erdmann struck again late in regulation as she headed in her second goal of the afternoon on a free kick that gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead over McNeese.

It seemed as the match was coming down to the wire and the Cowgirl fought with every bit of energy to not go down without a battle. That game plan worked as LaRicci netted her ninth goal of the season on a free kick from D'Alesandro in the 88th minute to knot the game up at 2-2. D'Alesandro recorded her sixth assist of the season on the play.

"I thought we played well for the most part today," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "We gave up two goals as they executed two free kicks nicely. We had a lot of grit to get ourselves into overtime and felt like we created enough throughout the game and the extra periods to put it away but we didn't. Give credit to AMCC for fighting but I am proud of our girls for putting up a fight as well."

The final minute saw no action and both teams headed to overtime.

AMCC led McNeese in shots, 3-2, in the first overtime period but neither team could find the net and had to settle for another extra period.

The second overtime saw the Cowgirls take control with a 4-0 shot lead. Senior Bettina Brulhart had a good look in the 103rd minute as she took a shot but it was saved by AMCC's Jordan Wainwright. McNeese attempted a pair of corner kicks towards the end but could not convert and settled for the tie.

McNeese outshot A&M-Corpus Christi, 30-13, in the game. Brulhart took a career high seven shots with one on goal for the Cowgirls while LaRicci had three shots on goal in the match.

Before the match, the McNeese soccer program honored seniors Brulhart, Kelley Clancey, Emily Silva and Hannah Sutherland.

McNeese will close out the regular season on the road Friday evening at Lamar with the match set for a 7 p.m. start.
