LAKE CHARLES – It all comes down to one match.
With the regular season finale set for Friday night in Beaumont, the McNeese women's soccer team looks to punch its ticket to the Southland Conference Tournament when it faces off with rival Lamar at 7 p.m. at the LU Soccer Complex.
The Cowgirls (8-8-1, 4-5-1 SLC) head into the contest currently sitting in fourth place in the Southland Conference regular season standings. With the top six teams eligible to make the tournament, a victory or a tie would most likely seal the deal for McNeese, giving the team its first postseason appearance since 2014. A loss would most likely introduce a couple of tiebreaker procedures that could have the Cowgirls on the edge of their seats waiting for results around the league.
McNeese is coming off of an unbeaten weekend with a victory over Houston Baptist and a draw against A&M-Corpus Christi. The Cowgirls have lost just one match in their last five outings and are 4-5 on the road this season.
The McNeese squad enters the game ranked second in the league in points (91) and third in goals scored (30) while providing the second most assists (31). Junior
Savannah LaRicci has the fifth most points (24) in the conference and has scored nine goals which ranks third. LaRicci and junior
Gabi D'Alesandro rank tied for fifth with six assists each.
Lamar (1-14-3, 0-7-3 SLC) looks to play spoiler in Friday night's game after dropping a pair of matches to Houston Baptist and AMCC last weekend. The Cardinals have not won a league match but have tied Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and Incarnate Word this season.
Jordan Mulnix and M.J. Eckart have each provided 10 points for the Lamar squad this season while Rachel Gries has 79 saves and two shutouts in 13 starts between the posts.
