LAKE CHARLES – Fight. That word is one of many that could be used to describe the 2016 McNeese women's soccer team's determination for success.

When the team was voted to finish 10th in the preseason polls, the team chose to fight. When it was all set and done, the Cowgirls finished sixth and punched their ticket to the Southland Conference Tournament.

The road to the postseason has been long and winding but it has been the sheer will and determination that has driven this team to strive for success each and every day that it steps onto the pitch. The goal is to make itself a better a team. That is exactly what the Cowgirls have done.

McNeese (8-9-1, 4-6-1 SLC) looks to make history on the field when it faces off against in-state rival Northwestern State in the first round Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Cowgirls enter the tournament as the sixth seed while the Lady Demons are seeded third.

Wednesday's match means a lot to both squads. McNeese has not won a postseason match since the 2008 season while Northwestern State is making its first trip to the conference tournament since 2008. Combined, both squads have captured five tournament crowns.

The winner of Wednesday's match will move on to the semi-finals on Friday at 4 p.m. to face off against the No. 2 seeded Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks.

McNeese and Northwestern State have met just once before in the league tournament with the Lady Demons scoring a 4-2 victory back in 2000. Northwestern State defeated the Cowgirls, 2-1, in Lake Charles earlier this season.

Despite falling to Lamar in Beaumont, the McNeese squad finished out the regular season unbeaten in three of its last five matches.

Savannah LaRicci will lead the offense on Wednesday. LaRicci has been outstanding each time out this season and leads in all three scoring categories with nine goals and six assists for 24 points. The Sugar Land, Texas native has provided two game-winners this season in huge games against Texas State and Houston Baptist.

On the defensive side, juniors Nikki Schaaf and Gabi D'Alesandro will lead the backline as the Cowgirls look to limit their opponents on the pitch. The McNeese defense has posted four shutouts this year.

Opening round and semifinal games of the tournament will be streamed live on the Southland Conference Digital Network, available at Southland.org/live and on the Southland Conference app. Jacob Bell will call opening round action, followed by Kevin Piel providing play-by-play during the semifinals.

In addition, fans can also get in-game updates as well as behind the scenes coverage of the Cowgirls by following @McNeeseSoccer on Twitter and by liking the McNeese Sports page on Facebook.
