LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's soccer team looks to make more history Friday evening when the No. 6 seed Cowgirls take on second-seeded Stephen F. Austin at 4 p.m. in the semi-final round of the 2016 Southland Conference Tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Â
The Cowgirls (9-9-1, 4-6-1 SLC) advanced in the tournament after taking down No. 3 seed Northwestern State, 1-0, in overtime Wednesday night. Sophomore
Dayna Garcia netted the game-winner just three minutes into overtime to give McNeese its first tournament victory since the 2008 season.
Â
However, the Cowgirls' work is not done as they look to capture another historic moment. A win on Friday would move McNeese into the tourney championship for the first time since 2008. The Cowgirls were finalists in three consecutive title games from 2006-2008.
Â
If McNeese should happen to advance into the championship match on Sunday, it will be the first time since 2006 that a No. 6 seed would have advanced into the finals. The Cowgirls were the last squad to do so when they captured the tournament title with a 1-0 victory over Texas State.
Â
All-Southland Conference second-team honoree
Savannah LaRicci will lead the Cowgirls into the match with nine goals, six assists and two game-winning goals this season. All-SLC first-team selection
Gabi D'Alesandro looks to lead a McNeese backline that has posted five shutouts this season while junior goalkeeper
Annie Bravenec is expected to start her 18
th match in goal. Bravenec has tallied 71 saves and turned in four clean sheets this season.
Â
Always a viable threat in the Southland Conference, Stephen F. Austin enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed and earned a first round bye after finishing the regular season with a 12-4 overall mark and a 9-2 record in league play. The Ladyjacks' only blemishes in conference action were against regular season champion Central Arkansas and Nicholls. SLC first teamer Hanna Barker leads the team with 27 points on nine goals and nine assists. First-teamer Breanna Moore is second on the team with eight goals and one assist. In goal, second-team selection Lillie Ehlert has logged in 1,333 minutes, allowing 13 goals while posting seven shutouts. Mosley has a 0.88 goals against average this season.
Â
Friday's match will mark the fifth time the two programs have met in the conference tournament. SFA defeated the Cowgirls in 1998, 2007 and 2009 while McNeese took down the Jacks in 2006. The Cowgirls fell to SFA, 2-0, earlier this season in Nacogdoches.
Â
The winner of Friday's match will face either No. 1 seed Central Arkansas or No. 4 seed Houston Baptist in Sunday's championship match slated to be broadcast on ESPN3 at 1:05 p.m.
Â
Opening round and semifinal games of the tournament will be streamed live on the Southland Conference Digital Network, available at Southland.org/live and on the Southland Conference app. Jacob Bell will call opening round action, followed by Kevin Piel providing play-by-play during the semifinals.
