LAKE CHARLES – McNeese will enter the final week of the regular season with one goal in mind, qualifying for the postseason Southland Conference tournament.
The Cowboys can take one step closer, and even clinch a spot, with a win at Lamar on Monday night.
Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Lamar's Montagne Center. The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN3 and on the McNeese Radio Network on Cajun Radio (1470 and 1290 AM and
www.CajunRadio.com).
McNeese (7-19, 5-11 SLC) is currently in the eighth and final spot for the tournament that gets underway on March 9 in Katy, Texas. The Cowboys are two games ahead of Nicholls (3-13) and Lamar (3-12) in the standings and just a half-game behind UNO and Northwestern State for sixth place.
"We're focused on Monday night and Lamar and that's all," said head coach
Dave Simmons after his team's last-second win over Nicholls on Saturday.
McNeese controlled most of the game on Saturday but lost the least late before rallying to send the game into overtime when
Jarren Greenwood hit a three-pointer with four seconds to play, then stole the ball away from a Nicholls player when attempting to put up a game-winning shot.
In overtime,
Jamaya Burr sank a fall-away jumper in the paint with two seconds on the clock to give the Cowboys the win.
The Cowboys will look to get revenge on the Cardinals after Lamar posted an 87-76 win over McNeese in Lake Charles on Feb. 20.
Burr will lead the Cowboys into Monday's game with a team-high 15.3 scoring average. He's seen his average increase over a point per game over the last five outings where he's scored 20 or more in four of those games including 20 points against the Cardinals in the first meeting.
McNeese will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a visit to Central Arkansas.
