LAKE CHARLES—McNeese softball capped off their Southland Conference series sweep over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with its second straight no-hitter in a 7-0 win Saturday.
"We have great fans here in Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana," said head coach
Joanna Hardin. "They have supported us with their resources and time, its enjoyable to show them what their efforts have done for us. We are a direct reflection of our fans and this community, we were excited to get to play in front of them this weekend.
After junior
Rachel Smith threw a no-hitter in the second game of Friday's doubleheader, senior
Emily Vincent threw just as good of a game Saturday and was one walk away from throwing the programs second perfect game. Vincent gave up a leadoff walk in the seventh and still ended the game with her first career no-hitter and the programs sixth.
"It's always a fun atmosphere getting a start on my home turf," said Vincent. "I was just focusing on pounding the zone and letting my defense make plays for me. I did know about the perfect game but I was trying to focus more on getting the hitter out more than the situation. I'm super excited about the win and kind of irritated that I didn't finish the way I could have. Overall, I can be mad about a win," Vincent said.
McNeese (19-6, 6-0 SLC) opened the game with two runs in the second on RBI's by Vincent and Goree. A single run in the third from a double by Goree put the Cowgirls up 3-0. A four run fourth inning extended the McNeese lead to 7-0. A two RBI single by
Hailey Drew and another RBI single by Vincent accounted for three of the four runs. The other Cowgirl run came off an Islander error.
The Cowgirls had several chances in the final two innings to score one more run to end the game for their sixth straight run-rule win. The Cowgirls left the bases loaded in both innings and had the game winning run on third in the sixth with no outs.
McNeese picked up seven hits and six RBI in the game. Drew went 3 for 4 with two RBI and scored two runs. Goree and Vincent also had two RBI apiece.
Vincent struck out five and improves to 6-2 on the season with the win.
McNeese outscored the Islanders 27-1, outhit them 28-3, and stole eight bases in the series.
The Cowgirls will once again hit the road for their next five games including an SLC series at Houston Baptist Thursday with a single game at 4 p.m. The series will conclude with an 11 a.m. doubleheader Friday. McNeese will travel to Southern Miss on March 29 and South Alabama on March 30 before returning home to host Abilene Christian April 1 and 2.
