Softball Splits Doubleheader With Abilene Christian

LAKE CHARLES--  McNeese softball bounced back from its first Southland Conference loss of the season to defeat Abilene Christian 4-3 in 10 innings in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader. ACU won the opening game 4-2. The series will conclude with the rubber game at noon Saturday.
 
McNeese (25-7, 10-1 SLC) took a 2-0 early lead in the first inning of the second game on a RBI by Tori Yanitor for a 1-0 lead. The Cowgirls scored its second run of the inning on a Wildcat error. The lead lasted for an in as ACU (13-16, 7-4 SLC) tied the game with two runs in the third off a two run home run by Taylor Brown.
 
McNeese retook the lead with a single run in the bottom of the fifth when Erika Piancastelli, who was walked eight times in both games, hit her 17th home run of the season to give the Cowgirls a 3-2 lead. With that home run, Piancastelli is one away from tying the single season record of 18 she set last season.
 
ACU tied the game again with a run in the seventh off a RBI double by Peyton Hedrick.
 
McNeese couldn't get a run to cross the plate in the bottom of the seventh and left the bases loaded to send the game into extra innings. Neither team would score in the next two innings, sending it into a tiebreaker rule in the 10th in which the player that made the last out the previous innings is placed on second base to start the inning.
 
ACU's Cara Hoover was placed on second and went to third on a sac bunt but Cowgirl reliever Emily Vincent got Holly Neese to pop out to second and struck out Brianna Barnhill.
 
In the bottom of the 10th, Taylor Goree was placed on second for the Cowgirls. Yanitor moved her to third on a sacrifice bunt and Vincent singled to second base to score Goree to win the game.
 
McNeese picked up nine hits in the game and was led by Yanitor and Shanice Hagler with two apiece. Yanitor picked up two of the four RBI's for McNeese.
 
Vincent picked up the win in relief of Jamie Allred to improve to 8-2 on the season. Vincent gave up two hits and struck out five in 3 2/3 innings. Allred gave up six hits, three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.
 
In the opening game, McNeese led 2-0 after three innings on RBI'S by Morgan Catron and Goree. ACU cut the Cowgirl lead in half by scoring a run in the fourth on a RBI by Casey-May Huff. The Wildcats scored three runs off one hit and one error. Cowgirl pitcher Rachel Smith hit two of the first four batters she faced then walked pinch hitter Alyson Bishoff. Alli Spivey's single tied the game at two apiece but ACU would go on to score two more runs on a Cowgirl error to take a 4-2 lead.
 
McNeese left the tying runs stranded on first and second in the bottom of the seventh when Null got Catron to pop out to second base and Goree went down looking to end the game.
