Pokes Drop Series Finale; Seeded Sixth In SLC Tourney

PULLMAN, Wash. – The McNeese baseball team dropped its regular season finale Saturday afternoon with a 12-9 loss to Washington State but the Cowboys left Bailey-Brayton Field knowing that the season is far from over as they prepare to enter the 2016 Southland Conference Tournament next week.

Despite not playing a conference game over the weekend, McNeese (29-23) earned the No. 6 seed leading into the tournament after finishing with a 15-15 conference record. The Cowboys, who will make their fifth consecutive tournament appearance, face No. 3 seed Northwestern State Wednesday at 9 a.m. to open the tournament.

Washington State (18-33) got out to a big lead in Saturday's series finale scoring 10 runs through the first three frames of the ballgame including a five-run surge in the third inning.

However, the Pokes showed no signs of surrender and battled back throughout the final two-thirds of the contest. McNeese cut into the lead with three runs in the fourth inning sparked by an RBI-double from freshman Austin Nelson. Jacob Stracner and Will Fox followed with an RBI-each.

Nelson was by far the highlight of the contest as he hit 4-for-4 on the day with three RBI and two runs scored. Stracner was also a huge factor in the scoring effort with two hits and three runs batted in. In all, the Pokes hit 12 times during the game and had four total batters turn in multiple-hit efforts.

Senior Connor Crane extended his multiple-hit game streak to five on the year.

McNeese added three more runs in the next frame to cut the WSU lead to a 10-6 score. Junior Matt Gallier began with a two-RBI single through the left side while Stracner tallied another RBI.

Nelson and Stracner both helped to narrow the WSU lead down to two runs in the seventh with a pair of RBI's but the Pokes could not stop the Cougars from scoring a run in the bottom of the inning and in the eighth to up its lead. Nelson scored the only other run for McNeese in the top of the eighth.

Senior starting pitcher Bryce Kingsley (5-1) suffered the loss for McNeese as he tossed only two innings and gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks.

The Cowboys used six total pitchers in the game and received the longest outing from freshman Grant Anderson who worked 3.0 innings and gave up no runs on two hits and struck out three batters.

Scotty Sunitsch was credited with the win for WSU after having worked 5.0 frames and gave up six earned runs on eight hits.

McNeese left 10 on base and committed five errors in the game while WSU stranded 11 and made one hiccup.
