Box Score HAMMOND – The McNeese women's soccer squad hung in with one of the top offenses in the Southland Conference Friday night but could not overcome a second-half surge from Southeastern Louisiana as the Lions scored a 3-1 victory over the Cowgirls in Hammond.
With the loss, McNeese falls to 3-4 overall on the year and 0-1 in league action while Southeastern Louisiana improved to 4-4-1 this season along with a 1-0 mark in SLC play.
The Lions got out to a 1-0 lead after 16 minutes of play as SLU's Amber Lasher knocked in a deflection to give her team the early lead.
It was junior
Kayla Goedicke who put the Cowgirls on the board in the 53
rd minute of action after having received a pass from
Savannah LaRicci on a throughball to knock it into the left side of the net. It was Goedicke's second goal of the season while LaRicci was credited with her first assist.
SLU took back the lead in the 65
th minute of action during the game as Casey Peacock drilled a shot from the outside box for the 2-1 lead. Peacock upped her team's score once again in the 83
rd minute to put the game out of reach when she headed a corner kick into the net.
Despite being down, the Cowgirls never quit its aggressive offensive approach, having attempted 12 shots in the game as compared to the Lions 10 attempts. McNeese tried 10 shots in the second half alone but it was the hands of SLU goalkeeper Hope Sabadash that spoiled any attempt of scoring as she made eight saves on 12 shots faced.
???????"We started slow tonight and gave up a soft goal," said head coach
Drew Fitzgerald. "We actually played better in the second half and created enough chances to win, but didn't finish. I am happy with our grit in the second half, but we need to do it for the whole 90 minutes."
Goedicke led the attack with four shots on the night while
Sara Ortiz attempted three shots of her own. In total, six Cowgirls attempted at least one shot.
McNeese returns home for its final non-conference matchup of the season when it welcomes Prairie View A&M to Lake Charles Sunday afternoon with first kick set for a 1 o'clock start.
