LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's soccer team continues its Southland Conference homestand Sunday afternoon when the Cowgirls welcome in-state rival Northwestern State to town for a showdown that is set to kick off at 1 o'clock.
The Cowgirls enter the match 4-5 on the season and 0-2 in league action after falling to Central Arkansas, 5-0, Friday evening while Northwestern State improved to 4-5 and 1-1 in SLC play after downing Lamar, 1-0, in its last match.
McNeese looks to avoid one streak while keeping another alive on Sunday. The Cowgirls have not lost three straight SLC matches to start the season since 2013 and are also looking for their third straight win over the Lady Demons in the all-time series.
Despite suffering from a shut out on Friday night, McNeese is nothing but determined to get its offense back on track. The Cowgirls are averaging two goals and 12 shots per game while scoring two or more goals four times this year. The Lady Demons are attempting the same shots but a little over a goal in each game on the season.
Savannah LaRicci continues to be the anchor for the McNeese offense with 15 points (six goals and three assists) while 10 total Cowgirl players have scored a goal this year. Recently voted HeroSports.com HERO of the Week for her performance on the pitch last weekend,
Gabi D'Alesandro has played a valuable part in helping set up the Cowgirls to be successful in every phase of play.
Northwestern State is led by April Trowbridge with four goals this season while the Lady Demon defense has allowed eight goals in eight matches – not counting an 8-0 loss to SMU and have posted four shutouts on the year.
Sunday's match marks the 29
th all-time meeting between McNeese and Northwestern State, with the Lady Demons leading the series 13-10-5. The Cowgirls pulled off a 2-1 victory over Northwestern State last season in Natchitoches and is 5-7-1 all-time at home against the Lady Demons.
