LAKE CHARLES-- McNeese volleyball will look to bounce back from its loss at Stephen F. Austin Thursday night when the Cowgirls travel to Sam Houston State Saturday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
McNeese (4-14, 0-3 SLC) will be looking for its first conference win of the season when they take on the BearKats (7-9, 1-2 SLC) Saturday. The Cowgirl losses have come against three of the top teams in the conference standings. Its most recent loss was to SFA Thursday, a team that is tied for first place with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and one of three teams that are undefeated in league play at the current time.
Inconsistency has been the problem for the Cowgirls of late but that can be expected when you have several players who don't have that much playing experience or who haven't been on the court together long enough. Seniors
Bridget Justis and
Rebecca Korenek along with juniors
Adison Giambrone and
Rae Myers have the most playing experience on the team. Setter
Alexandra Aguilera is a sophomore but didn't see much playing time as a freshman. Throw in a junior college transfer along with six freshmen and you will get inconsistency.
Despite all of that there have been some bright spots this season. Freshmen,
Keegan Nelms and Katelyn Elliot lead the team with 184 and 136 kills, respectively. Justis is tops with 301 digs and Nelms is second with 184. D'Alessandro has 34 blocks and freshman
Haley Schneider is second with 29 while Myers leads the Cowgirls with 11 service aces.
Sam Houston State snapped a five-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over Nicholls Thursday night.
