Soccer Suffers First Defeat To UAB, 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The McNeese women's soccer team showed a valiant effort in Sunday afternoon's contest against the University of Alabama Birmingham but was unable to prevent the Blazer's offensive attack and was shut out, 3-0, at BBVA Compass Field.
 
With the loss, McNeese dropped to 3-1 on the year while UAB improved its overall mark to 3-2. It is the first time this season that the Cowgirls suffered defeat in both exhibition and regular season play.
 
UAB took early control on the pitch with a goal in the second minute of action following a cross shot in off of a corner kick. The Blazers outshot McNeese, 9-3, in the first half of Sunday's match.
 
The Blazers netted its second goal of the match in the ninth minute and followed with another just before the break to take a 3-0 lead over the Cowgirls.
 
McNeese competed with UAB in the second half outshooting the Blazers, 6-4, and holding the opposition scoreless.
 
Senior Bettina Brulhart led the team with three total shots in the game, including two shots on goal. Six total players recorded a shot in the game.
 
McNeese goalkeeper Annie Bravenec tallied four saves on the day on 13 shots faced.
 
UAB led the day in shots, 13-9, and in corner kicks, 6-3.
 
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 9 when they travel to Lafayette for a showdown with rival UL-Lafayette. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start.
