LAFAYETTE—McNeese volleyball snapped a four-match losing streak here Tuesday night with 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 25-19, 27-25) win over UL-Lafayette.
Junior
Rae Myers stepped up big tonight in place of senior outside hitter
Rebecca Korenek who went down with an injury early in the match. Myers led the Cowgirls with 15 kills and a .400 hitting percent. Myers committed only one hitting error in 35 attempts. Freshman
Keegan Nelms joined Myers in double figures with 10 kills and completed a double-double with 21 digs. Setter
Alexandra Aguilera also recorded a double-double with 36 assists and 14 digs.
Bridget Justis tallied 11 digs.
After dropping the first set 25-16, McNeese evened the match with a 25-20 second set win to even the match at one set apiece.
"What a match," said head coach
Ashleigh Fitzgerald. "What a bummer wit Becca (
Rebecca Korenek) going down in the first set with an injury and us just not playing well- we really responded.
Rae Myers stepped in and really contributed. We served and passed the ball better as the match went along."
With the second set tied at four all, a kill by
Alexandra Aguilera gave McNeese a 5-4 lead before
Adison Giambrone served for two more points to extend the Cowgirl lead to 7-4. UL-Lafayette would come back to tie the set at 11 but a
Jenny D'Alessandro kill put the Cowgirls up by one (12-11). Back-to-back Cajun errors extended the lead to 14-11. Giambrone spearheaded a Cowgirl run that resulted from kills from
Keegan Nelms and
Rae Myers for a 17-12 lead. McNeese continued to put pressure on the Cajuns and a D'Alessandro kill gave the Cowgirls a 24-20 lead. McNeese evened the match at one set apiece on a Cajun error.
The Cowgirls took a 2-1 set lead with a 25-19 third set lead after hitting .391 on 10 kills and committing only one hitting error.
McNeese closed out the match with a thrilling 27-25 fourth set win and the overall match to improve to 2-6 on the year. The set went back and forth from start to finish and was tied 13 times. McNeese had a chance to win the set, leading 24-23 but a kill by UL-Lafayette's Nia Antoine tied it up at 24 all. A kill by Myers gave the Cowgirls the lead again but ULL tied it up again on the next play. Nelms' kill put the Cowgirls up 26 25 and it was only fitting for Myers to end the match on an ace that landed in the middle of defenders.
The Cowgirls will continue on the road this weekend when they will travel to Springfield, Missouri to take part in the Mary Jo Wynn Invitational.
