Rivalry Week Continues As Soccer Visits ULL Friday

LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's soccer team will be back in action Friday when they head to Lafayette for a contest with the Ragin Cajuns in the second of three rivalry games between the two university's.

The Cowgirl volleyball team won in four sets against ULL Tuesday while the McNeese football team is set to take on the Cajuns Saturday at 6 p.m.

A soccer victory would assure the rivalry series win for McNeese State University.

"ULL is a game the girls look forward to playing every year," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "Obviously there is a bit of a rivalry there and both schools want bragging rights, so there is usually a little extra edge to the match.  As coaches the best thing about it is that it has the feel and intensity of a conference match so it's a great opportunity to get ready for Southland Conference play, which is our primary focus."

McNeese (3-1) split a pair of matchups last weekend that included a 6-1 victory at Southern while dropping a 3-0 shutout at UAB. The Cowgirls will wrap up a three-game road stand with the Cajuns Friday before coming home to take on ULM on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Junior Savannah LaRicci continues to be an offensive weapon having scored four goals on just nine shots taken. LaRicci leads the team and is third in the league in goals scored. Senior Bettina Brulhart and junior Kayla Goedicke lead with two assists apiece.

UL-Lafayette (3-3) endured a rocky start to the season but has since won two straight contests against Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana. The Cajuns are 3-1 on their home turf this season.

MacKenzie Higgins has scored a team-high six goals while Ashleigh Cade leads the team with five assists. Mackenzie Lee has made four starts between the posts so far this season and has 15 saves to her credit and a 2-2 record.

ULL leads the all-time series against McNeese, 7-2-3, and has won three straight against the Cowgirls since 2012. McNeese last captured a win against the Cajuns in 2011 in a 2-0 victory in Lafayette.
