BEAUMONT, Texas – McNeese faced number one Lamar, Friday night, dropping the match 4-1 on the road in Beaumont. This is only McNeese's third SLC loss of the season and good for the number three seed for the 2017 Southland Conference Tournament.
McNeese (12-5-1, 8-3) faced Lamar (15-3-1, 9-1) in the final game of the regular season, the loss leans the Cowgirl-Cardinal series in favor of Lamar 6-5.
Lamar had a small lead at the half, ahead of McNeese only 1-0 after a successful penalty kick by the Cardinals in the sixth minute of play.
The second half was aggressive for both teams, with both squads firing off more shots on goal compared to first half action. Lamar would score three more times in the match, two goals off of corner kick opportunities in the 46
th minute and 71
st.
Lamar stand out Kelso Peskin would net her 8
th of the season after a double assist from her teammates and a touch into the net in the 49
th minute.
McNeese would make it a point to put a score on the board, and who better to do so than senior forward
Savannah LaRicci. LaRicci score her 12
th goal of the season in the 77
th minute of play. Her goal would be the last of the match for either team.
The two teams were neck and neck with shots taken, Lamar with 13 and McNeese with 12. LaRicci lead the Cowgirls with three shots, with seven others getting a foot on the ball as well.
The Cowgirls will now begin preparing for their second consecutive SLC Tournament appearance, with the hopes of clinching a playoff birth as well. As the No.3 seed, McNeese will begin tournament play on Wednesday, November 1
st at 2:00PM against No.6 Abilene Chrisitan.
