LAKE CHARLES—McNeese volleyball began its five game home stand with a tough and exciting 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-23) win over Abilene Christian here Thursday night. The win is the second victory over the Wildcats in just over a week. McNeese picked up a 3-1 win in Abilene Christian last Tuesday.
McNeese (12-8, 4-2 SLC) dropped the first set to the Wildcats (6-11, 2-3 SLC) but scrapped and clawed to come from behind in all three to pull out the victory.
"This was a tough match," said head coach
Ashleigh Fitzgerald. "ACU is long and athletic and you never get easy swings from them. I was proud of our ability to stay cool under pressure no matter the score. We came from behind a lot and showed a lot of character. I'm really excited we knocked them off for the second time this season," said Fitzgerald.
The match consisted of outstanding plays on both sides of the net from both teams and at times it was which team was going to make the most of their opportunities.
For McNeese, the Cowgirls got offensive production from a lot of players. The Cowgirls were led in kills by
Shanna Spree and
Ebony Lewis, who both ended the match with 11 apiece.
Keegan Nelms added 10. Both Lewis and Spree also led McNeese with a .579 and .385 hitting percent, respectively.
The Cowgirls got added offense and defense from freshman
Allison Lippert who came off the bench to record a season high six block assists and tied her season high with eight kills.
Setters
Adison Giambrone and
Alexandra Aguilera did their part in dishing out the assist. Aguilera led the Cowgirls with 26 and Giambrone dished out 24.
Angela McGownd was once again steady on defense as she picked up a match high 28 digs. Nelms completed her double-double with 12 digs.
McNeese will remain at home to host Sam Houston State at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
