LAKE CHARLES –
Nate Fisbeck's career day paid dividends for the McNeese baseball team as the Cowboys concluded the first day of action at 15
th Lake Area Classic with an 18-2 victory over Stony Brook Friday evening at Joe Miller Ballpark.
Fisbeck collected three hits, a run and seven RBI, all of which were single-game highs for The Woodlands, Texas native. The seven runs batted in by Fisbeck were the most by a Cowboy player since Kevin Mitchell drove in eight against Southeastern Louisiana in March of 2001.
With a 1-0 lead and two outs in the bottom of the first, Fisbeck opened the gates as he fired a triple deep to left center, scoring three runs to give McNeese (1-0) a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Stony Brook (0-1) scratched its way back to within two of the Pokes before another offensive attack by Fisbeck dampened the Seawolves' hopes of a rally. Fisbeck launched a three-run jack, the first of his career, along with a
Shane Selman RBI-double to up the lead to a 10-2 score.
Selman finished the day with three hits, two runs and five runs driven in. In total, five Cowboys had multiple hit contests while three players reach based via a walk three times each.
Sophomore starter
Bryan King (1-0) was credited with the win after tossing 4.0 innings and allowing only one earned run off of three hits along with a strikeout.
Following King's exit, the Cowboys bullpen hurled five shutout innings and allowed only one hit during that timespan.
McNeese scraped three runs across in the fifth along with two in the six to go up by 13 runs over Stony Brook. The Cowboys finished it out with three runs in the seventh following RBI-hits from
Ricky Ramirez, Jr. and
Matt Gallier.
McNeese posted its fourth consecutive Opening Day victory under head coach
Justin Hill and first victory against Stony Brook in the series. The Cowboys' 18 runs were the most scored by a McNeese team since plating 16 against Incarnate Word in 2015.
Hill, now in his fourth season as the program's skipper, is six victories away from reaching 100 career wins as a Division I head coach.
The Cowboys will be back in action tomorrow as the Lake Area Classic will adapt to new game times. Missouri State and Stony Brook will start off day two of the event at 1 p.m. followed by the resumption of the Rhode Island and Missouri Contest at 4 o'clock.
