AUSTIN, Texas—Texas needed just two innings to score the runs it needed in a 4-0 softball win over McNeese here Wednesday.
The Longhorns (17-11) scored three runs on four hits in their first at bat of the game in the first inning to take a quick 3-0 then added an insurance run in the sixth on a solo home run.
Devon Tunning led the first inning off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stephanie Wong then scored on a double by Randel Leahy for a 1-0 lead. A single by Felix scored Mickenzi Krpec and Leahy scored on a single by Jade Gortarez. The Longhorn's got a pinch hit homerun from Bekah Alcozer in the sixth to extend its lead to 4-0.
McNeese (19-11) attempted to score in the first inning with two outs and
Erika Piancastelli on first and
Justyce McClain on second.
Alexandria Saldivar singled through the left side and McClain was thrown out at the plate from the left fielder. The Cowgirls never got a runner passed second base the remainder of the game.
The Cowgirls would get only one more hit of the game off a two out single by McClain in the third inning and left a runners stranded at second in the fifth and seventh innings.
Rachel Smith took the loss, falling to 6-5 on the season after giving up nine hits, struck out five and one walk. Texas picked up at least one hit in all but one inning.
Texas was led by Tunning's two hits and used all five of its pitchers. Erica Wright improved to 4-2 on the year after giving up one hit in two innings pitched. Wright struck out three batters and walked two.
McNeese will return to Southland Conference action this weekend when the Cowgirls travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on Incarnate Word in a three game series. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. The series will conclude with a single game at noon Saturday.
