LAKE CHARLES—Coming off a second place finish last weekend at the Texas-Arlington Maverick Classic, McNeese volleyball will travel to Mobile, Alabama this weekend to take part in the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational. Livestats will be provided for all matches but streaming will only be available for matches played against South Alabama.
McNeese (2-1) will open tournament play with a 3:30 p.m. match against Southern Miss on Friday. The Cowgirls will take on host South Alabama at 12:30 p.m. and Alabama at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday to conclude tournament action.
Southern Miss enters the tournament with a 4-1 record after opening the season with a 3-1 record at its own Southern Miss Invitational. The Eagles' lone loss of the season came against Miami last Friday. The Eagles are coming off a straight set win over UL-Lafayette on Wednesday.
After Hurricane Harvey canceled the Barcelona HBU Classic in Houston last weekend that South Alabama (0-2) was scheduled to take part in, the Jaguars traveled to New Orleans last Saturday for a pair of matches against Tulane. The Jaguars dropped both matches 3-2 and 3-0 to the Green Wave.
Alabama (2-1) opened its season at the Purdue Mortar Board Premier in West Lafayette, Indiana last weekend where they picked up wins over Cleveland State and Oral Roberts before falling to Purdue.
Sophomore
Keegan Nelms who was one of two Cowgirls named to Maverick Classic All-Tournament team heads into the weekend leading McNeese with 26 kills for an average of 2.36 per set.
Senior
Jenny D'Alessandro who was also named to the UTA Maverick Classic All-Tournament team is right behind Nelms with 25 kills for an average of 2.27 per set. D'Alessandro also leads McNeese with 10 blocks.
Senior
Adison Giambrone and junior
Alexandra Aguilera both split playing time as the Cowgirls' setter last weekend. Giambrone currently leads the team with 53 assists and recorded two double-double last weekend. Giambrone is averaging 4.82 assists per set. Aguilera has 28 assists for an average of 4.00 per set.
Sophomore libero
Angela McGownd was solid on defense last weekend, having picked up a career high 32 digs in the season opening win against Houston. McGownd has a team high 49 digs and is averaging 4.45 per set.
After having its scheduled home opener against Southern on Aug. 30 canceled due to Hurricane Harvey, McNeese will open its home slate on Monday, Sept. 4 against Grambling at 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Gym.
