LAKE CHARLES – McNeese soccer gave Wyoming a run for their money in Sunday's match in Laramie, taking the Wyoming Cowgirls into double overtime, eventually resulting in a 0-0 tie.
The first 45 minutes of play consisted of a heavy Wyoming offense and an extremely busy McNeese defense, in the goal for McNeese was junior
Brianna Lovett, who in her first start this season recorded one save in the nine shots she faced. Halftime brought a goal keeping change, and the next 65 minutes would go to redshirt-senior
Annie Bravenec who recorded five saves in the seven shots she faced.
Six McNeese Cowgirls were able to get their foot on the ball for a shot during the match, leading the team with three shots was junior forward,
Savannah LaRicci.
Nola Prickett,
Keely Morrow, and
Havana Johnson followed with two shots a piece.
Wyoming's offense may have outshot McNeese 16-4 during regulation, but the McNeese crew increased its aggression and pressure during overtime, taking three shots in the first ten minutes of overtime and an additional four in the final overtime period. The McNeese defense was able to keep Wyoming from taking any shots during either overtime period, limiting them to a total 16 shots in the match. Senior forward Alisha Bass lead Wyoming with five shots, one on goal. Head coach
Drew Fitzgerald comments on the teams ability to persevere, "Our girls just don't stop fighting and I'm really proud of them. There were some scary moments throughout the match but I thought our girls kept their composure and played the way we wanted to."

Rachel Palet, and
Sarah Clayton were on the pitch for all 110 minutes of Sunday's match. The three were part of a defense that allowed only six shots on goal, forcing the ten other Wyoming shots away from the goal. "I'm proud of our team for overcoming the obstacles presented to us. We played with a lot of heart and worked well as a unit," sophomore midfielder
Rachel Palet says.
Both teams advance to 2-2-1 on the season, each recording their first tie of the year. With today's tie, McNeese has allowed only two goals in five games, an average of .40 goals per game for its opponents. That's only two goals in 470 minutes of play. "Overall it was a great weekend for us in terms of learning more about our team and continuing to develop our personalized style of play," Fitzgerald says. "We've prepped to 'empty the tank' and I felt like we left it on the field today," Palet adds.
McNeese will return home to Lake Charles for the first time since August 18
th , and will host Southern on September 8
th at 7:00PM at Cowgirl Field. Friday's match against Southern is one of two games McNeese will play in before starting conference play against Southeastern (September 15).
