LAKE CHARLES- The McNeese Cowgirl soccer squad stayed undefeated at home with a 1-0 Southland Conference win against Nicholls on Friday night.

With the win, the Cowgirls also keep themselves in the hunt for a regular season conference title by improving to 3-1-1 in league play, 9-4-1 overall, while Nicholls falls to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

"In the end, it's a great job picking up three points at home and getting the win, we're really happy to win at home and have that record," said head soccer coach Drew Fitzgerald. "UCA is a different animal though and we have to get ready for that game on Sunday."

McNeese will host UCA on Sunday in a game that was postponed from its original date three weeks ago. 

On Friday night, the Cowgirls came out and showed their dominant defensive play from the opening kick by not allowing the Colonels a single shot attempt in the entire first half.

"We kept the ball well, we were patient even though it was frustrating. We didn't give the ball back and allow them chances to score," said Fitzgerald. 

The Cowgirls attempted 11 shots in the first half with five of them on goal but couldn't find the back of the net which resulted in the first half ending with the score still 0-0.

In the 57th minute, Nola Prickett found the back of the net with a beautiful header off a cross from Anna Watson, giving the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

With that goal, Prickett earned her third goal on the year and Watson her fifth assist on the year.

The Cowgirls outshot Nicholls 23-2 in the game and had a 13-1 shots-on-goal advantage.

The Cowgirls will be back on the field Sunday at 1 when they play host to Central Arkansas.
