Volleyball Defeats Prairie View In Straight Sets

LAKE CHARLES—McNeese volleyball snapped its five match losing skid Tuesday night with a dominating straight set 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-14) win over Prairie View (3-13) to remain undefeated at home this season.

McNeese (2-15) led from the get-go and cruised to the victory for the second time this season. McNeese ended the match with a blistering .353 team hitting percent, its highest of the season. The Cowgirls picked up 38 kills, eight errors in 85 attempts.

In the opening set, freshman Paige Havel broke a 10-10 tie with a kill for the lead and one McNeese wouldn't give up. McNeese extended the lead to 20-16 behind four straight points including a service ace by Allison Lippert. Another kill by Havel put McNeese up 24-19 then a service ace by Angela McGownd secured the first set win.

McNeese didn't have any problem in the second set as they jumped out to 15-7 lead on another service ace, this one by Alexandra Aguilera. A kill by Keegan Nelms extended the lead to 20-10 and the Cowgirls put the set away by scoring five of the last eight points.

Prairie View took the early lead in the final set but another run by the Cowgirls gave them an 11-6 lead.

Prairie View got within three points (14-11) but kills by Katelyn Elliott, Ebony Lewis and Lippert along with four Panther errors put McNeese up 20-11.

It was only a matter of time before the Cowgirls went on to take the third set and two more Panther errors was what McNeese used for their final two points to win the set and the overall match.

Nelms led all players with 10 kills while Lewis recorded a career high .583 hitting percent on seven kills without an error in 12 attempts. Nelms recorded her second double-double of the season by registering 10 digs to tie McGownd for a match high. Lewis was also credited with three blocks.

Havel continued her good play at the net by picking up seven blocks, the second most for the rookie this season. Havel also had a good night on offense, ending the match with a .429 hitting percent.

Freshman setter Amari Franklin dished out a season high 34 assists.

McNeese will return its Southland Conference schedule this Saturday with a road match at Lamar.
