Box Score EDINBURG, TX- The McNeese Cowgirls' four game winning streak was snapped after a 2-1 defeat Friday night by UT-Rio Grande Valley in overtime.
The first half was almost identical for both teams on the stat sheet other than goals.
The Cowgirls hit the back of the net in the 33rd minute when Morgan Middleton scored her third goal on the year, to give the Cowgirls (5-2) a 1-0 lead. That goal tied her making her with Havana Johnson for most goals on the season. Delana Friesen was awarded the assist for her first on the year
In the second half, UTRGV scored the equalizer from a header off a free kick in the 61st minute to knot things up 1-1, a score that would stand the remaining time in regulation.
In overtime, the Cowgirls had a few opportunities to take the game early in the period but came up just short
UTRGV scored the golden goal with four minutes left in the first overtime period on a high arcing shot on goal from about 35 yards out that squeaked right over the out stretched glove of Emma Roccaforte, who returned to action after missing the last two games.
"It took a pretty spectacular shot in overtime to get them the win," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "We'll regroup and get ready for another tough match at Houston."
"Emma played well and it was good to have her back," said Fitzgerald. "She came up with one big play to keep us even in regulation."
The Cowgirls head to Houston next to take on the Cougars on Sunday afternoon at 1.
