Maddie Neidig had the golden goal in double OT against SFA last Sunday.
THIBODAUX – McNeese will look to keep its hold on top of the Southland Conference soccer standings when it visits Nicholls at 4 on Friday afternoon.
This will be the first of two matches in three days for the Cowgirls (8-3-0, 4-0-0 SLC). They'll host Sam Houston State at 1 on Sunday in a make-up game that was originally scheduled to be played on Oct. 4 but was postponed due to the weather.
McNeese tied a school record with its sixth-consecutive win after downing Stephen F. Austin, 2-1, in double overtime last Sunday. It was the second double OT win for the Cowgirls in the last three games and tied a school record by winning their first four conference matches.
In the win,
Maddie Neidig scored the golden goal with just over six minutes to play in the second overtime period to give the Cowgirls their eighth win of the season. It was her first goal of the year.
For the season,
Anna Watson tops the team and is ranked No. 8 in the league with five goals scored and is fifth in the conference with a 1.45 goals per game average. Watson leads the Southland Conference with four game-winning goals.
Watson has recorded two assists on the season to give her a total of 12 points, ranking her seventh in the league.
Following Watson is
Delana Friesen who has netted four goals, ranking her 10
th in the league.
In the net,
Emma Roccaforte has posted a perfect 5-0 record since returning from an early season injury. She's allowed just three goals and has made 21 saves.
Nicholls will enter Friday's match at 0-5 in the conference and 3-8-1 overall. The Colonels have dropped six straight matches and eight of their last nine with the only win during that span being a 3-2 victory over Alcorn State.
The Cowgirls have posted a 24-4-2 all-time record against the Colonels and have won four straight in the series, including last year's 1-0 victory in Lake Charles.
McNeese will be searching for its first-ever 5-0 start to the Southland Conference season.
