WSOC: Cowgirls Pick Up School Record 7th Consecutive Win

THIBODAUX- McNeese soccer picked up its school record seventh consecutive win and the Cowgirls (9-3-0, 5-0-0 SLC) improved to 5-0 in the Southland Conference for the first time in program history with a 5-1 victory over Nicholls (3-9-1, 0-6-0 SLC) Friday afternoon. The win inched McNeese closer to clinching a spot in the 2019 Southland Conference Tournament.

"I'm proud of how we stepped up, especially in the second half," said associate head coach Nick Whiting. "A lot of our work from training this week really paid off and it showed on a few goals. It's exciting for Oliva (Broussard) and Havana (Johnson) for scoring two goals and we were able to use several players. Everyone who played put forth a good performance and that was exciting to see."

McNeese opened the scoring on a goal by Broussard in the 20th minute to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead. Nicholls' Elisabet Gunnthorsdottir score the equalizer in the 31at minute to tie the game at one apiece and that would be the halftime score.

It didn't take McNeese long to retake the lead when Broussard notched her second goal of the game one minute and 49 seconds into the second half for a 2-1 Cowgirl lead.

Fifteen minutes later and into the 61st minute, Johnson took a pass from Maddie Neidig and sent it to the back of the net for a 3-1 lead. The two players connected again 12 minutes later for another goal that put McNeese up 4-1.

Carissa Adams closed out the Cowgirls scoring with her first goal of the season and second career goal off an assist from Macalya Bass' first career assist.

The two goals by Broussard gives her three for her career, all coming this season and the two goals by Johnson are her fourth and fifth this season, bringing her career total to 18.

McNeese returns home Sunday to host Sam Houston State at 1 p.m. in a game that was previously postponed on Oct. 13 due to lightning.

Tickets purchased for the Oct. 13 game will be valid for Sunday's contest.
